G2.IG Defeat Azure Ray In The Longest Series In Dota History To Qualify For Birmingham
After almost an eight-hour series and 5:34:40 total playing time, G2.IG bested Azure Ray in the grand finale of the ESL One Birmingham 2024 China Closed Qualifier.
The first map of the Best of 5 already showed that both teams were worthy of being in the Grand Final. It was a back-and-forth game, but G2.IG eventually took a huge lead. Lou on Luna had to figure something out and made an all-in-play on the enemy’s naked Ancient. However, Lou’s play fell short when Backdoor Protection kicked in and G2.IG’s throne survived with around 100 HP. Due to this failure of a respectable attempt, G2.IG eventually won the game after 85 grueling minutes.
The second map started passive, with both teams exchanging a few kills but farming for the most part. In the 44th minute, an excellent Flaming Lasso from Fy’s Batrider caught Monet’s Medusa, allowing the entirety of Azure Ray to focus on the opposing Carry. This play won Azure Ray the fight, leading into Roshan and the game.
The third map was dominated by G2.IG, who was looking confident and controlled the entire map. Azure Ray only had one play, Song of the Siren into Black Hole. The execution was there, as Lou and Bach set up a four-man Black Hole, but even that wasn’t enough to win the game. G2.IG took the lead 2-1.
Of the day with tons of highlights, most of it came from the fourth map, which lasted 107 minutes. Azure Ray had firm control over the entire game and G2.IG never had a lead of even one single gold. However, due to Monet's Faceless Void, Azure Ray could not end the game. With the fear of elimination and an eight-slotted Faceless Void waiting for their arrival, Azure Ray farmed for a very, very, very long time. After dozens of Rapiers, Azure Ray could finally end the game and bring the series to a decisive Game 5.
Azure Ray dominated the laning stage in the final map, but after a string of mistakes, G2.IG punished Azure Ray to take the lead in the game. The Malaysian-Chinese squad snowballed their lead and won the game by the 44th minute. Believe it or not, 44 minutes was the shortest game in this insane series.
With this victory, G2.IG qualified for ESL One Birmingham 2024, a $1,000,000 tournament that will take place in April.
